THE CHALLENGE

In Rwanda, there is a national healthcare system known as “Mutuelle pour tous,” in which the government subsidizes citizen’s health insurance and medical bills. The Rwandan population is divided into four social categories with the first receiving full government coverage for health insurance, the second and third categories’ paying 3,000 RWF a year for health insurance and 10% of all hospital bills. The fourth category pays 7,000 RWF a year towards health insurance and 10% of any hospital bills they incur.

Gemura- Food for all

It is no secret that being properly fed is a crucial part of patient’s recovery. Food is neither provided by the hospital nor is it covered by the “Mutuelle” insurance. Members of Solid Africa believe that food is just as critical as medicine on the road to recovery, and stand firmly behind the idea that “Food is Medicine” Therefore, Solid Africa has pursued several different programs that provide food to patients in various hospitals. Kiza- Medical Expenses

In the Rwandan health care system, “Mutuelle” covers medicine available only through the hospital pharmacy. Drugs obtained through outside pharmacies are not paid for by “Mutuelle.”Solid Africa assists the most socio-economically challenged by covering payment of these medicines. The organization also assists in the provision of special medical care items such as crutches and wheelchairs. Read More

Gombora- Hospital Bills and transport

Patients unable to pay the remainder of their bills, (10% that they are required to cover) are forcibly made to stay on hospital grounds until payment is received. With this program, Solid Africa seeks to assist in the payment of uncovered hospital bills, and transportation fees to enable patients to return to their homes. Read More

Sukura- Hygiene

Many of the patients, especially children and new mothers, have specific hygienic needs. These patients are high priority because basic hygienic products such as soap, toilet paper, sanitary pads, towels, and blankets can have a huge impact on their health and recovery. Solid’Africa works every week to provide these items to those most in need. Read More
