The Challenge

In different African countries, governments provide health insurance to cover direct medical costs for low-income populations. Most countries, however, do not include food services as part of a hospital healthcare stay, often delegating that responsibility to family or community members. Patients from low-income families may go days without food or have low-nutrition foods that often do not match their medical needs, and lack of access to nutritious food undermines patients’ potential for recovery. Solid Africa is addressing this gap with our 11-year-old program, Gemura: Food for all, through which we provide meals to about 1000 patients from six public hospitals in Kigali, each getting three square meals daily.
